Champi expected to pass just south of or over southern Guam 4–6 a.m. as a super typhoon
Typhoon Warning and COR 1. NWS Guam (9:19 p.m. Saturday): Typhoon Champi has rapidly intensified into a dangerous Category 4 — 130 mph at 7 p.m., about 145 miles east-southeast of Guam, moving west-northwest at 13 mph — and is expected to pass a little south of Guam as a super typhoon within the next 12 hours, potentially bringing devastating winds to much of the island. GHS/OCD (JIC Release No. 9): closest approach is expected between 4 and 6 a.m. Sunday, just south of or over southern Guam, with 150 mph winds possible. Winds: typhoon-force winds are imminent and will increase over the next several hours, with maximum winds of 110 to 135 mph and gusts to 175 mph; NWS does not expect winds to fall below typhoon force until late Sunday morning, or below tropical storm force until late Sunday evening. Coastal flooding of 5 to 7 feet, especially on eastern and southern shores, with breaking waves of 30 to 35 feet; southern coastal and flood-prone areas should already be in safe shelter. Rain: 8 to 14 inches; a Flash Flood Warning is in effect for Guam until 3:30 a.m. Stay inside a sturdy, concrete-reinforced building until COR 4 is announced, and do not go outside even if it turns calm — the eye may pass over, and conditions return fast. GWA will keep the water system on but pressure may drop; GPA is not shutting the power system down, but outages are expected. Emergencies: 911. JIC hotline: (671) 478-0210, 478-0208 or 478-0209. GHS/OCD’s Joint Information Center also announced an official WhatsApp channel (JIC Release No. 9).

Stay out of the water — rescues may be delayed; generator and visitor safety for COR 1
The Guam Fire Department is taking its water rescue units out of the water and securing them; water rescue may be delayed or limited depending on weather and sea conditions. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room only for life-threatening or urgent emergencies, so crews stay free for critical calls. Generators: outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors and windows — never in a garage, even with the door open; carbon monoxide is odorless and deadly, so if you feel dizzy, nauseous or weak, get fresh air and call 911; let the generator cool before refueling; use heavy-duty outdoor cords and don’t overload it. Use flashlights, not candles; stay away from floodwater and downed power lines; charge your phones now. Water: GWA had 101 production wells online at 6 p.m. and will not shut off the water system during the storm, though pressure may drop to low or none at times; store 1 to 2 gallons of drinking water per person per day in clean, covered food-grade containers, fill tubs and buckets for cleaning and flushing, and don’t wash cars or driveways. Report water or sewer emergencies to GWA dispatch at 671-646-4211. Power: GPA is not shutting the island’s system down, but outages will happen as lines and feeders are damaged, and crews stand down until it is safe. Report downed or sparking lines, damaged poles or blown transformers to GPA’s 24-hour Trouble Dispatch at (671) 475-1472, 475-1473 or 475-1474, with the exact location. Visitors: stay inside your hotel until COR 4 is declared, follow hotel staff, shelter in an interior room away from windows, and stay away from beaches, cliffs and shorelines. GVB’s multilingual concierge runs 24/7 at (671) 588-3030. Consulates: Japan (671) 646-1290; Korea (671) 647-6488/9; Taiwan Economic & Cultural Office (671) 685-8668; Philippines (671) 646-4620.
